I. Overview
Faculty of Medicine – Nam Can Tho University provides high-quality medical education, focusing on
professional knowledge, practical skills, and medical ethics.
Students study in a modern learning environment featuring Nam Can Tho University Hospital and a
system of advanced laboratories. A dedicated team of lecturers and an up-to-date curriculum support
students’ comprehensive development, preparing them to contribute effectively to community
healthcare.
Establishment and development
-
The Faculty of Medicine at Nam Can Tho University originated from the Faculty of Medicine
and Pharmacy, which was established under Decision No. 34/QĐ-CTHĐQT-ĐHNCT in July 2017. In
2018, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees signed Decision No. 28/QĐ-CTHĐQT-ĐHNCT on March
20, 2018, officially separating the Faculty of Medicine from the Faculty of Medicine and
Pharmacy.
-
Since its establishment, the Faculty of Medicine has been tasked with offering undergraduate
training programs in the health sciences, including: Medical Imaging Technology and Medical
Laboratory Technology (both full-time and part-time programs); and General Medicine
(full-time program).
Graduate outcomes and contributions
-
In 2021, thanks to the close guidance of the university leadership and the dedicated efforts
of the faculty and staff, the first cohort (2017 intake) of students majoring in Medical
Laboratory Technology and Medical Imaging Technology successfully graduated with a high
completion rate.
-
Moreover, the majority of graduates secured employment, meeting labor market
demands—especially during the critical period of the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak in
2020–2021.
II. Functions and Responsibilities
The Faculty of Medicine is responsible for training students in various
health science disciplines. Its duties include developing training programs, organizing and
implementing teaching activities, compiling textbooks and theoretical/practical lectures, planning
instructional schedules, and evaluating student performance. Given the specific nature of medical
education, the Faculty also serves as a vital bridge and collaborates directly with healthcare
institutions not only in Can Tho City but also across the Mekong Delta provinces to train and
enhance the local medical workforce.
III. Activities
Achievements and Recognition
-
Over the past five years of operation and development, the Faculty’s achievements have been
officially recognized by the University. Specifically, the Faculty was honored with the
title of “Advanced Labor Collective” for multiple consecutive years (2018, 2019, 2020, and
2021). In addition, many faculty members received certificates of merit for “Outstanding
Individual Performance” in recognition of their continued dedication and efforts.
-
In addition, the high graduation rates of students in the Medical Laboratory Technology and
Medical Imaging Technology programs, along with positive feedback from alumni and high
employer satisfaction, are noteworthy accomplishments that reflect the dedication and
collective efforts of the Faculty’s academic and administrative staff.
IV. Development
Strategic Direction and Mission Implementation
-
Upholding its mission to train professional healthcare personnel to serve medical
examination, treatment, and community health care across the country—particularly in the
Mekong Delta—the Faculty of Medicine has set a strategic direction to continue strengthening
its core academic units. These departments are being developed to become robust and capable
of fulfilling their essential roles and functions.
-
Simultaneously, the Faculty is implementing plans to train and enhance human resources not
only in teaching but also in clinical practice and community healthcare.
-
In addition, the Faculty continues to serve as a bridge between the University and
healthcare institutions, or directly collaborates with hospitals and diagnostic centers, to
jointly train and develop a competent healthcare workforce in response to the demands of
globalization.
V. Organizational structure
Organizational structure of the Faculty
-
As of now, the organizational structure of the Faculty includes the Faculty Board, two
assistants
(academic affairs and administration), and 20 departments. Among these, there are 8 basic
science
departments and 12 clinical departments. Each department—the core unit of the Faculty—is
structured
with a Head/Deputy Head, an academic coordinator, and teaching staff. In the 2022–2023
academic year,
the Faculty plans to continue advising the University Board of Rectors and the Leadership
Team on the
recruitment of qualified and experienced lecturers in the health sciences. This aims to
further
strengthen the human resource framework and establish additional specialized departments.
Faculty's teaching staff and international collaboration
-
The Faculty is proud to have a dynamic, qualified, and dedicated teaching staff. Most
lecturers hold
advanced degrees such as PhDs, Master's degrees, and MDs. Many of them are experienced
physicians who
have worked for years in major hospitals across the country and now contribute to teaching
at the
Faculty. In addition, the Faculty benefits from the participation of highly skilled doctors
from the
United States, further enhancing the quality of medical education provided.
