Introduction to the USMLEs

The United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) is a series of licensing exams required to practice medicine in the United States. The USMLE is composed of three main steps:

• Step 1: Tests foundational knowledge in basic medical sciences.
• Step 2 CK (Clinical Knowledge): Assesses clinical knowledge across medical specialties.
• Step 3: Evaluates the ability to manage patients independently.

The Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) administers the USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 for international medical graduates (those outside the U.S.):

• Ensures that international medical graduates meet the eligibility criteria to take the USMLE.
• Provides the ECFMG Certification, a requirement to apply for residency programs in the U.S.

Medical students and graduates from ECFMG-recognized institutions can apply for the USMLE as long as their graduation year is included in the approved list.
